The Rank Card
The rank is the card your team is currently playing for. You start at 2, climb with each win, and finish a set at A. The four cards matching that rank become the rank cards — every 2 while at rank 2, every 9 while at rank 9.

They are strong in two ways. As singles they beat an A and sit just below the jokers. And the two hearts among them are wild, standing in for any card except a joker. The trade-off: that rank leaves the number sequence, so at rank 9 a 9 can no longer be used inside a straight.
Why the hearts are wild
All four rank cards outrank an A as singles, and the two hearts are wild — they can stand in for any card except a joker. Played alone the wild is just itself, and it can never build the royal bomb.
